MANILA - A saleslady from Makati ended the three-day reign of Laguna's Jessa Montefalcon in grand fashion on Tuesday's "Tawag ng Tanghalan," earning a standing ovation from the judges of the singing contest.
The 23-year-old Rachel Gabreza got a near-perfect score with her cover of Jennifer Hudson's "I Am Changing." Her performance helped her dethrone Montefalcon, who sang "Maghintay Ka Lamang."
Gabreza, who won P25,000, will return on Wednesday to defend her crown.
Montefalcon's three-day reign as champion is the second longest streak since "Tawag ng Tanghalan" started this month. Davao's Dominador Alviola Jr., the first semi-finalist of the contest, holds the most wins with six.

3 Filipino singers triumph in different singing tilts in Europe

Rachel, the grand champion at the 2018 Stars of the Albion in London, United Kingdom, performs “diva or birit” songs herself. But facing a largely European audience, she learned that musical taste varies around the world.
“When they see or hear someone good, they really show their appreciation—regardless of whether that person can belt or not,” she said. “I actually have some background in classical singing, but I do birit pieces in contests. But there are already a lot of divas out there. I want to be successful, but in my own way.”
